As part of a proposed mixed-use development in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood, this project introduces a rooftop amenity designed to serve as a daily outdoor gathering space for residents. Mattapan, characterized by its affordable land and abundance of vacant parcels, also bears the legacy of industrial activity—contributing to both its cultural richness and its ongoing challenges, including a lack of housing and accessible open space.
To help address these issues, the design includes streetscape enhancements for public benefit and a thoughtfully programmed rooftop deck for residents. Envisioned as a central amenity, the roof deck prioritizes accessibility, comfort, and community-building—encouraging frequent use and fostering meaningful social interaction among residents.
Beyond initial programming, the design also emphasizes longevity and low-maintenance functionality. By selecting durable materials and planning for sustainable upkeep, the rooftop space is positioned not only to meet immediate needs but also to remain relevant and inviting for years to come.
Supporting graphics—such as plan views, usage diagrams, and visual renderings—were developed to communicate the design intent to both project stakeholders and the wider community.
