This three-month research project, conducted in Barcelona, investigates the adaptive reuse of post-industrial spaces to address the evolving needs of contemporary urban life. As global manufacturing declined after the 1800s, many former industrial cities have been challenged to transform vacant factories and underutilized land into assets that support economic revitalization and urban resilience.
While rooted in the context of Barcelona, the research offers broader insights applicable to post-industrial cities across the United States. A range of analytical tools was used, including photography, figure-ground studies, GIS mapping, and historical research, to understand spatial patterns and development potential.
Findings from the study are shared in both a large-format poster (featured here) and a comprehensive research book, accessible through the link below. Together, these materials offer a framework for reimagining industrial heritage as a catalyst for urban renewal.
